ABOUT
What is the difference between yoga therapy and yoga?

While a general public yoga class can certainly help alleviate everyday aches, pains, and mood complaints, yoga therapy offers a deeper, more personalized approach to healing. Unlike a group class, yoga therapy is specifically tailored to the individual. It begins with a comprehensive assessment and goal-setting process, ensuring that the therapy aligns with the person’s unique needs and challenges. Rather than simply addressing the condition that brought someone to yoga, yoga therapists treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.
IAYT-certified yoga therapists undergo extensive training, which typically includes over 800 hours of coursework in addition to standard yoga teacher training. They also complete a minimum of 100 teaching hours before certification. This rigorous preparation equips them to assess clients effectively, keep them safe, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals when necessary.
Yoga therapy is delivered in a one-on-one session or in a small group setting. It draws from the full range of yoga tools—not just asana (postures), but also breathing techniques, visualization, meditation, and the wisdom found in traditional texts, among others. It is a holistic and complementary approach, blending time-tested traditions with evidence-based practices. Yoga therapy empowers individuals to actively participate in their own healing, supporting both physical and emotional well-being while working in harmony with other medical treatments.
